Hi there,
Its seems like this winter never ends but we have been keeping ourselves warm with some amazing music.
For some time now we have been listening to this amazing band from Africa and they are called: Staff Benda Bilili.
Their name translates as " look beyond the appearances" and thats where their music comes in.

They are this remarkable band of paraplegic musicians who live around the grounds of the Zoo in Kinsahasa. Most members of the band are disable- paraplegic victims of the polio virus and homeless. These congolese street musicians play music which is rooted in rumba, with elements of old-school rhythm 'n' blues and reggae.

Their hand cranked wheelchairs are huge contraptions that look as if they are made of cast- off section of bicycles and motorcycles. Their story is extraordinary and their music comes straight from the heart.

Check out their myspace, sign up as friends, support this amazing group !
You will be hearing more from this group in the beginning of the summer.

A Black Bike celebrates 400 years friendship between New York and the New Netherlands

Greetings !

We hope everyone had a great holiday.
The year 2008 just flew by, and we have been very fortunate to have had such a great year. The amount of press we have recieved was just amazing, the feedback of clients and supporters have been a true blessing. We really would like to thank each and every one of you for sending emails and pictures from all over the United States. We Thank you !!

We have got a lot in store for you guys, we have been very busy creating our accessories line, due to the overwhelming response during the holiday periods we have experienced a slight delay. We thank you for your patient and will hopefully have that section up and running soon on our site.

The year 2009 is a very special year, and we will be celebrating that in every way . Exactly 400 years ago a Dutch Captain named Henry Hudson departed Amsterdam on a Dutch East India Company ship called the Halve Maen ( Half Moon). Hudson sailed up the New York River that now bears his name. His voyage attracted Dutch traders to the area, leading to the establishment of divers, relatively tolerant settlements; Nieuw Amsterdam and the Nieuw Netherlands colony. Up till this day the Dutch have had a lasting impact on America's culture and heritage.

Since we are a Dutch Bicycle company based here in New York, we wanted to celebrate this beautiful long lasting tie and create a platform for different artist from Amsterdam and New York. This will be in the field of Arts, Design or Fashion. We will celebrate the free spirit, openness, entrepreneurship and tolerance of those Dutch-American pioneers, and their continued relevance today and beyond. As of the month February , you will receive updates from our Creative Director who will give you the ins and out on all activities that will ocure here in the city and share news from both sides of the pond.

To learn more go to : http://www.henryhudson400.com or www.ny400.org . We are looking forward to a productive and colorful year.

Stay warm !
Best,
A Black Bike

Black is the New Green

It has been a couple of weeks since we've mentioned anything on our blog, but we have been very productive and are on our way to changing the means by which people think of using bicycles as transportation. We are pleased to announce our press release...

BLACK IS THE NEW GREEN:
211 ELIZABETH PARTNERS WITH “A BLACK BIKE”, JOINING BICYCLE REVOLUTION IN NYC

Buyers Will Receive Authentic, Custom Dutch Bicycles
Promoting Healthy, “Green” Transportation

New York – There is a two-wheel revolution taking place in NYC. The City is taking major strides to become bike-friendly and promote this healthy and eco-conscious mode of transportation by proposing 200 miles of new bike lanes, more than 1,000 new bike racks and a new law calling for commercial buildings to provide storage for commuter bikes. 211 Elizabeth, the new collection of 15 spectacular homes in the heart of Manhattan’s Nolita, is at the forefront of this revolution. Developers Robert Siegel and Peter Manning have partnered with A BLACK BIKE, the first Dutch bike company based in NYC, to give each of their buyers a custom-designed bicycle.

A BLACK BIKE is working to bring the Dutch enthusiasm for bicycling to NYC, designing exquisite, classically styled bikes, which perfectly reflect the hand-crafted, early 20th century style of 211 Elizabeth and the old-world European character of Nolita.

“Around the world, we’ve seen how bikes can have serious environmental, social and economic impact, which is why a portion of the proceeds from each bike goes to the World Bicycle Relief fund,” says Muna Whitfield, owner and creative director of A BLACK BIKE. “New York City is working to integrate biking into the fabric of life for its residents and 211 Elizabeth is helping to bring focus to this important movement.”

The 15 one- and two-bedroom homes at 211 Elizabeth redefine custom luxury. Celebrated designers Roman & Williams used classic materials and expert craftsmen to imbue 211 Elizabeth with authenticity and grace. With pre-war inspired layouts, wood-burning fireplaces, 7-foot black wood-framed windows and kitchens tailored to each layout, the residences have a timeless elegance that is shared by the bicycles crafted by A BLACK BIKE. Based on a century-old design, A BLACK BIKE’s bicycles are produced in Holland using the highest quality materials. Each of 211 Elizabeth’s custom bicycles will feature leather hand grips, an embossed leather saddle, rear mud shields and a bell, and residents can park their chic new rides in the building’s onsite bike room.

The Power of Bicycles

We have always believed that bicycles can improve the world and the lives of the people in it. As bike lovers, we understand the importance of this unique machine. What can be seen by one as recreational biking can be seen by another person as an economic development. Just as we carefully research each new bike detail, we carefully research which projects we could like tocollaborate upon and support.

We are proud to be a supporter of World Bicycle Relief-- an organization that empowers individuals, their families, and their communities. We believe that we can make a difference in the world, no matter where, by donating a percentage of our company profits to causes that promote and facilitate bicycle usage.
